If you are buying your first premium card binder, the choice usually comes down to two formats: 9 pocket or 12 pocket. How many cards do you actually need to store?
A modern TCG set is usually between 160 and 200 cards before secret rares, and a master set with every alternate art and secret rare can pass 250. A 9 pocket binder with 360 slots covers a full set with room for the chase cards you pick up later. If you collect two or three sets at once, or keep every holo you pull, the 12 pocket format's 480 slots stop you outgrowing the binder within a year.
Page layout and readability
Nine pocket pages show cards in a 3 x 3 grid, which matches how most set checklists and card databases are laid out, so building in set-number order is simple. Twelve pocket pages add a fourth row. You see more cards per page turn, but the page is taller, so the binder is bigger and heavier once it is full.
Portability
If your binder lives in a backpack for card shows, league nights or trading at school, the 9 pocket format is easier to carry and easier to hand around a table. A full 12 pocket binder is better suited to a shelf at home where it stays flat and protected.
Protection is the same in both
